If This is What You Want More of in Elk Grove, Support the SOI

This bit of presumed gang tagging was spotted on a wall facing Power Inn Road just south of Calvine  Road in far north Elk Grove, about a quarter mile north of Monterrey Trail High School. Although we can’t be totally certain, based on some research, this tag seems to match the Crips color and style.

What does it mean?
This presumed gang display is disturbing on many different levels.

It has been at the Power Inn Road bus stop since at least Thursday morning and was there as of 7:00 AM this morning when the photo was taken.

It is not certain who is responsible for maintenance of this wall (either The City of Elk Grove or the Cosumnes Community Services District) but it seems that Elk Grove Police patrol officers would have noticed this and reported it to the appropriate agency to have it removed pronto.

It has been there for at least 48 hours. Hopefully it will not take much longer to have this display removed.

From our view, this tag symbolizes one of the by-products of Elk Grove’s unbridled real estate development over the last ten years and could easily be a barometer of our future. Just as Elk Grove pushed expansion along the southern suburban ring of Sacramento County, older areas of South Sacramento have suffered.

Just where did all the dealers in the Elk Grove Auto Mall come from? Keeping in mind the effects of the Great Recession, these dealers were not new businesses, rather they were transplants.

And where did these dealers transplant from? Most of them moved from Florin Road corridor.

A drive along Florin Road reveals almost all the dealerships abandoned. As goes the businesses along Florin Road, so goes the neighborhood.

Not coincidentally we we now find graffiti in the northern reaches of Elk Grove from one of the most notorious street gangs in the world just as two Elk Grove City Council members and some of the city's executives (some of whom do not even live in Elk Grove) are pushing for more expansion southward through the ill-conceived sphere of influence (SOI) application.

Where does it end?

Just as the Elk Grove Auto Mall has crippled (pardon the pun) the Florin Road dealers and its neighborhoods, the SOI has the potential to do the same to neighborhoods in Elk Grove.

If this Crips tag is any indication, it may have already started.

Is this what we really want?
