Recent storm and warm temperatures will increase mosquito bite, West Nile Virus risks

What's more American than fireworks and family BBQ’s? These are all activities many in Elk Grove will enjoy this holiday weekend, but the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District reminds the public that mosquitoes will also be out looking to bite and that proper precautions to avoid West Nile virus are necessary.

“This weekend, many will be outside enjoying the fireworks and other evening activities when mosquitoes are most active,” David Brown, District Manager of the Control District said. “It is very important for everyone to protect themselves by wearing an effective mosquito repellent.”

The recent storm left a lot of stagnant water and the hot temperatures expected over the weekend will create the ideal conditions for mosquitoes to breed and multiply.

“Now more than ever we urge all residents to do their part and help us control mosquitoes that may be developing in their back yard,” Brown said. “In hot weather it only takes 4-7 days for mosquitoes to complete their life cycle. This means that in the days to come we’ll see a significant increase in the number of mosquitoes and this adds to the risk for contracting West Nile virus.”

Last week, a second second dead bird was found that tested positive for West Nile virus and as hot summer temperatures continue, the virus is expected to amplify.

“All it takes is one bite from an infected mosquito to become ill,” Brown said. “Everyone needs to take proper precautions to avoid being bitten.”

In 2010, 6 deaths and 111 human WNV cases were reported in California.
