UFCW Local 8 members picket Fresh & Easy.

Elk Grove's newest grocer, Fresh and Easy on Elk Grove-Florin Road, was targeted yesterday afternoon by picketers representing union grocers.

The picketers were representing the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 8 based in Roseville. This union represents numerous grocery and retail store workers at area Bel Air, Food Maxx, Foods Co, Food Source, Raley's, Rite Aid, Save Mart and Safeway stores.

The stores are being targeted for what their pamphlet says are "substandard wages that lower the quality of life in our community." None of the three picketers in attendance would comment on their activities or reveal their identity for this story.

The picketers referred questions to the union. A union spokesperson said in turn that only local President Jacques Loveall is permitted to reply to media inquiries and does so only via email. As of this posting Loveall has not responded to inquiries.

Fresh and Easy store personnel referred inquiries to their corporate office in Southern California who, like the union, only respond to media inquires via email. As of this posting, Fresh and Easy has not responded to email inquiries.

"The UFCW has long attacked our business, well before we even opened our first store," said Fresh and Easy spokesperson Brendan Wonnacott. "We’re thrilled to have created more than 150 jobs with good pay and healthcare benefits in the Sacramento area – and certainly the more than 1,000 people who applied to work at our Elk Grove store agree that Fresh & Easy is a great place to work."

Went to Fresh and Easy to see what all the hype was about. Couldn't help but notice the irony is the green paint when this store appears anything but green. Clear plastic clamshells galore. Appearance is of an open air European market, again filled with more plastic clamshells that I have every seen.

1 pound to 1 1/2 pound of tangerines, equally a grand total of 6 very small pieces of fruit, for 98 cents. 5 pound box at Henry's was $3.99. Chicken thighs for $1.19 a pound that are available elsewhere for as little as 69 cents a pound.

UCFW8 really has not worries here. With the prices I saw this store won't be open for long....unless people are into throwing away their money when better quality and less expensive food is available at a number of other locations.

Where were all the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 8 picketers when Bel Air in elk grove closed? I didn’t see any picketers at Bel Air out there trying to keep it open.

Hang in there Fresh and Easy, they did the same thing to Winco when it opened, but it’s still there.

The picketers at Winco kept saying how superior union stores were to non-union stores so I went to Safeway on Laguna Blvd. and as I walked into the front door they had stacks of moldy strawberries for sale…I went back to Winco and bought fresh non-moldy strawberries.

If all you union reps and members would have stepped up and tried to keep Bel Air open, you wouldn't be unemployed and having so much time on your hands to picket a store that just created JOBS in Elk Grove.

Now you know why people detest unions: You won’t fight to keep a store open but you’ll picket a company that isn’t union because they hire regular people that need jobs and are non-union.

Why not, instead of being in a union, you save all your dues to feed your families and fire the people getting rich off your dues while you are unemployed.

Non-union businesses ARE what will bring back this economy, not the unions. If unions were so effective, why aren’t there more jobs across the U.S.?
