According to a story in today's Sacramento Bee, murder suspect Ryan Hays killed 19-year-old Joseph Oropesa after Oropesa bought 13 OxyContin pills from Hays for $400. Immediately after the sale, Hays stole the car Oropesa had used that night and then shot him in the face.
Oropesa died a short while later and Hays was apprehended and arrested Wednesday in rural Stanislaus County.
Hays, who was nicknamed "Heff," allegedly was a known drug dealer in Elk Grove according to information in the arrest warrant. One comment posted on this site alleged Hays was a known Elk Grove drug dealer.
OxyContin, a prescription pain relieving medication is widely abused across all social and economic classes. The drug is nicknamed "hillbilly heroin" because of its origins of popularity coming poor rural areas from Appalachia and its abusers have included radio personality Rush Limbaugh.
