A National Iniative - Really?

In the aftermath of the SCOTUS decision that upheld President Obama's Affordable Care Act (ACA), much has been written and spoken on this landmark case. Short of the bombast coming from the usual suspects, most, most, of the discussion has been relatively thoughtful.

That was until last Wednesday when a local writer published an op-ed clearly indicating they do not have a firm grasp on how our federal representative democracy functions.

The writer, who opposes the ACA, said "What the majority should have done, in Ol' Dad's opinion, is declare the bill unconstitutional and allow the folks in the country vote on if they want a tax to fund medical assistance."

Mind you the writer did not say something like "We ought to pass a constitutional amendment and put such matters up to the vote of the people." NO - the writer seemed to confuse a state initiative with a national initiative.

The last time we checked, there was nothing in our constitution that spells out a national initiative process. Of course if we are wrong, please let us know.

Given our experience in California, can you imagine how this might work on a national level?

The point is that this writer is unable to coherently propose a viable alternative to the maligned ACA and acts to dumb-down an otherwise important conversation that we as a nation need to partake in. So the next tine you read something from this writer, keep this in mind.
