A Sacramento man was apprehended Saturday night after allegedly shoplifting and fleeing in a car from an Elk Grove sporting goods store.

According to Elk Grove Police, 39-year old Simme Shelton was observed shoplifting and exiting through an emergency door at the Big 5 store on Laguna Blvd. The suspect was seen getting into the passenger seat of a burgundy Jaguar sedan the was last seen heading eastbound on Laguna Blvd.

Responding officers located the described vehicle a short distance away and conducted a vehicle stop. Shelton was a passenger in the vehicle and was detained.

A store employee positively identified Shelton as the suspected shoplifter. Shelton was arrested and taken to the county jail and the stolen merchandise was recovered inside the vehicle. There was no report of the driver of the car being detained.
