With the voting closed as of 12 noon today, Elk Grove News' first straw poll of 2014 resulted in a lopsided outcome. This first vote was for the Elk Grove City Council District 4 seat.

With a total of 202 votes cast, Steve Ly was overwhelmingly selected by 176 voters, Nancy Chaires received 17 and Charles Shanks got one vote. There were also four votes each for none of the above and some other unnamed candidate.

As we have noted in previous posts, straw polls are not scientific and these results are an early gauge. Keep in mind that the winner of the 2012 Iowa Presidential was Michelle Bachmann and following that victory, her candidacy floundered. .

Notwithstanding the criticism of this particular poll, EGN will conduct more polls for this and other races of interest to Elk Grove. Our next poll will gauge Elk Grove voters' preferences in the California Assembly Ninth District race.

Come on, no one believes this. Why are you even writing about it?

Oh Sarah, have a latte and lighten up. We're just having some fun while it takes our minds off what the "powers that be" are doing with our taxpayer dollars. The latest being the Bond/Silverado project. The city thinks it can fool Mother Nature, but in the end Mother Nature gets it's way!

One thing for sure Steve Ly has 176 followers who read Elk Grove News and Nacy 17. I have a feeling the elections will look very similar to this.

Yes, I agree let us have a little fun here. I would like to think that maybe a straw pole in Elk Grove could cause some to begin to think about our city's real issues and direction. I am probably dreaming here but what I would really like; the campaigns to be about issues, not personalities or parties. What "vision" do those running have for Elk Grove? Do they have a plan? If they have served on pc or held previous office; look at voting records....We all want a safe community, good schools, jobs, and a stronger economy...this is a given...how about some thoughts on how to make that happen....plans...
Maybe, just maybe a few straw poles will give one cause to pause and think...

As we saw with Michelle Bachmann, she was “giddy” after the Iowa straw vote. She thought it would take her all the way to November.

Well, as Lynn said, this straw poll was all in fun, because in the end straw polls are highly unreliable because nothing in the process ensures that those who respond will represent a reasonably accurate cross section of the total population.

Just ask Michelle, for her, the victory was symbolic, the reward was not:

this is absurd, what did Mr. Ly do this time, buy everyone a device so they can vote for him? I am not a Nancy supporter, but I can't believe how lopsided the results are. Sandy better start riding that bicycle of hers and stop sipping latte.
