Cooper Narrowly Edges Fong For Lead in Ninth Assembly District Poll

In a poll that closed earlier today, Elk Grove Vice Mayor Jim Cooper narrowly edged fellow Democrat Sacramento City Council Member Darrell Fong, as the preferred candidate in a five-person primary race for California's Ninth Assembly seat.

The unscientific poll showed Cooper capturing 11 votes or 26 percent of votes casts to Fong's 10 votes or 23 percent of the 42 total votes casts. The third Democratic candidate, Sacramento City Unified School District Trustee Diana Rodriguez, garnered five votes or 11 percent of the total.

Of the two Republicans in the race, Lodi's Manuel Martin got five votes for 11 percent and Elk Grove's Tim Gorsulowsky received no votes. A newcomer to area politics, Gorsulowsky ran as a write-in candidate for the city council of Saratoga, Calif. in 2012 before relocating to Elk Grove.

Also receiving votes were none of the above and undecided which captured 8 votes or 19 percent and three votes or seven-percent respectively. None of the above finished in third place ahead of Rodriguez, Martin and Gorsulowsky.     

The unscientific poll was conducted over a five-day period that concluded earlier today. The top two finishers in the June primary, regardless of party affiliation, will advance to the November general election.
