Elk Grove-based candidates Nancy Chaires and Jim Cooper participated in yesterday's voter forum in Sacramento sponsored by the Hmong Community of Sacramento.

Chaires is in a three-way race for the District Four seat of the Elk Grove City Council while Cooper is in a very tight five-candidate race of the Ninth District seat of California Assembly. The city council election will take place in November while the first round leading to the November election for Cooper will take place during the June primary.

Along with Chaires and Cooper, other area candidates participating in the forum included Dr. Richard Pan and Roger Dickinson for the Sixth California senatorial seat, Cooper's Assembly opponents Darrell Fong, Manuel Martin and Diane Rodriguez and a representative for Sacramento District Attorney candidate Ann Marie Shubert and one of her opponents, Maggie Krell.

While the majority of the candidates taking part in the forum were Democrats, Ninth Assembly District Assembly candidate, Lodi-based Republican Manuel Martin and Congressional candidate Doug Ose also participated.

"I'm honored to have had the opportunity to participate with the Hmong community forum and learn some of their concerns, I will do my best to defend the American freedoms immigrants like those from the Hmong community seek," Martin said.

Elk Grove City Council candidate Nancy Chaires said the forum was a good opportunity to share her view on working collaboratively with various communities.

"I shared with the Hmong community my commitment and track record of being true to my values and keeping my word," Chaires said. "I am humbled by their growing support and encouragement."

Chaires' opponents in the Elk Grove City Council race, Daniel Jimenez and Steve Ly,  and a third candidate for the District Attorney's seat, Democrat Todd Leras, did not attend the forum.

You have to assume Ly was invited but it seems strange that he didn't attend. You would think that is a home field advantage.

Just for the record. I wasn't invited.

Thank you,
