When the Elk Grove City Council meets tomorrow night, they will be asked to consider three different funding options for the long-planned wayfinding sign project.

Wayfinding signs, as their name implies, are billboards placed throughout a specific area to help direct out-of-town visitors to points of interest. The program was conceived in 2011 and are part of Elk Grove's on-going effort to transform the city into a tourist destination.

The program was budgeted at $387,000 but the city's project consultant estimated the cost would be $759,000, or about $11,000 per sign. Because of the costs overrun, city staff asked the consultant to redesign the signs to lower per unit cost which resulted in a cost of $3,500 per sign.

City staff will present three alternatives to the city - an upgraded project, a reduced project, or a mix. The respective cost of each are reported to be $650,000, $250,000 and $457,000.

Tomorrow night's meeting starts at 6 p.m.

Everytime I see some new spending idea with the "out-of-town visitors" associated with it I want to scream. This is NOT some resort town, what in the heck is wrong with our city Leaders? 69 signs..totally insane! What in the h*@l are they thinking about? They won't even let some Mom & Pop business located in a set back location put a sign out closer to the street.

We DO NOT have visitors driving our streets looking for a park or some other little venue to visit. Guide them to the Police Dept. & Medical Facilities...2/3 signs and we're in business.

If this is an example of what it takes to keep our city employees busy, then we are overstaffed. Time to clean house. NO wonder our Planning Dir. left....who in the heck could stand a daily diet of this?

The above poster is right and so is Mr. Lee in his commentary.

Who exactly is coming to Elk Grove as a tourist / vacationer?

What do we have to draw tourists / vacationers?

Please stop the madness!
If anyone from out of town is visiting here it's because they have family here. Family knows where things are and can direct their friends / relatives.

This whole idea of "way finder" signs is so ridiculous, not to mention costly. Please stop throwing our tax dollars around and spend them on something the entire community can support.

Council should ask themselves before approving these frivolous endeavors, "Would I spend MY MONEY on this?"

If the answer is no, then let it die.

Geez!!

I have to agree with the comments above. This is a waste of our tax dollars.

I'm sure the city reads these blogs. Sometimes I think they just approve these wasteful expenditures just to show us they're in charge.

47 way finding signs? Really?

The Park, the PD, the hospital, city hall...what else is worthy of a way finding sign? Perhaps Gil Moore's Fast Food Frenzy?

Michael Monasky had a point last night, there are so many more needed uses for that money than these stupid signs that no one can read without stopping their vehicle.

Forrest Gump said it best, "Stupid is as stupid does."
A good reference to actions coming out of city hall.
