A suspected shoplifter was arrested in Elk Grove yesterday afternoon after eluding pepper spray and running across Highway 99.

According to Elk Grove Police reports, 46-year old Teddy Miller of Sacramento was observed shoplifting at the Home Depot on West Stockton Boulevard. After he exited the store with the stolen merchandise, Miller allegedly refused to be detained and pulled a pocket knife on a store employee.

Miller then fled on foot towards another shopping center and the employee was able to catch up to him as he was climbing over a fence towards Highway 99. An unknown citizen deployed pepper spray on Miller who managed to escape and successfully crossed all lanes of traffic on Highway 99.

Responding police officers apprehended Miller on East Stockton Boulevard. The suspect was arrested and booked into the county jail where he remains in custody on $60,000 bail.
