In an effort to help in-need families, the Elk Grove City Council last night unanimously approved the purchase of a residence to provide transitional housing services.

This seven-bedroom residence, located on Meadow Grove Drive, is being purchased in part with Federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and affordable housing funds and will be used to assist homeless families. In 2013, the city purchased a residence now known as Grace House that acts as transitional housing primarily for single clients.

During her presentation on the purchase, Elk Grove Housing Program Manager Sarah Bontrager said the facility is well-suited to assist Elk Grove families who have found themselves in a tough situation with programs to help them get reestablished in the community. She also stressed that after hearing initial concerns from neighbors about Grace House, that facility has run smoothly and incident-free.

"We never had a single complaint," she said.

Bontrager also noted clients of the facility will be screened and have background checks conducted. Once the city purchases the property, it will be turned over to Sacramento Self Help Housing, who will then operate the facility.

During public comment, several individuals representing a variety of groups said the facility will help families and aid children. Rebecca Santos, the homeless services liaison from the Elk Grove Unified School District said having steady housing without having to changes schools is beneficial to children.

"It would make a tremendous benefit to keep them in the community," Santos said. "This would make a huge difference."

During their deliberations, Vice Mayor Jim Cooper said the facility will be well-suited to address the city's needs and commended the host of volunteer community groups who assist in helping in-need families.

"But for the grace of God, it could be one of us," he added.

This house is on Meadow Grove Dr., not Gold Meadow. Corner of Meadow Grove Dr. and Webb Street. Not far from the other one they bought a couple of years ago, Grace House. Probably should look for other locations in the future to not concentrate these in one area.
