In a news conference held at an Elk Grove smog shop this morning, the National Federation for Independent Business (NFIB) formally endorsed Doug Ose.

A former three-term Republican Congressman, Ose is challenging incumbent Democratic Congressman Dr. Ami Bera for California's Seventh Congressional District. The contest is considered one of the most competitive congressional races this cycle.

Speaking on behalf of NFIB was it's executive director for California, John Kabateck, who said that Ose,  as a small business owner himself, will better represent their concerns in Congress. Kabateck noted that in Ose's previous stint in Congress, he had earned a 100 rating on NFIB's scorecard while Bera had a 20 during his first two years in office.

"That's why it's so critical that we give Doug Ose the opportunity to return to Washington, and continue his legacy of helping main street in California, and moving forward, " Kabateck said. "And giving Ami Bera a pink slip in November."

During his comments, Ose thanked the NFIB for their support and said that as a small business owner, he will represent their needs in Congress. Ose said Bera supported higher taxes and increased regulation, and he zeroed in on Bera's support of the Affordable Healthcare Act and reduced funding for Medicare.

"Congressman Bera has routinely and regularly voted to strip $716 billion from Medicare, at the precise time that our demographic of our population are putting a bulge of Americans into Medicare eligibility," Ose said. "That is bad policy, and President Obama and Congressman Bera need to be held accountable for their decisions, and votes, none of which today are benefiting Americans."

When asked to comment on Ose's Medicare assertion, Bera spokesperson Allison Teixeira called them a lie. Teixeira cited three different sources including stories in the Washington Post  and  Politifact  that both said the $716 billion cuts [Washington Post] "mostly are wrung from health-care providers, not Medicare beneficiaries" and are being done over a 10-year period.

"That's a lie that has been proven false again and again," Teixeira said. "Congressman Ose is obviously trying to distract voters from his shameful record of putting his own bottom line above Sacramento County seniors-- including voting to gamble their Social Security on Wall Street, and supporting ending the Medicare guarantee."

Roll Call reports that Bera's internal polls as of last week show him in a slight lead over Ose, but within the poll's 4.7-percent margin of error. The Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call currently rates the race as Leans Democratic.

Below is a video of comments by Kabateck and Ose at today's news conference.

Somewhat ironic isn't it? Mr. Ose talks about deregulation from a business whose very existence was brought on by clean air regulation. Can't have it both ways Mr. Ose.
