Mail Theft Problem Hitting Elk Grove Part of Statewide, National Problem

January 15, 2015 |

Like many communities in California and across the county, Elk Grove has experienced a significant uptick in mail theft.

Although there are no readily statistics available, Elk Grove Police Department's Crime Prevention Specialist Officer Andrew Bornhoeft told EGN the department has received numerous calls on mailbox vandalism and mail theft.  Bornhoeft said these Federal crimes are often reported directly to the United States Postal Service.

"Yes, mail theft is a huge problem right now," Bornhoeft said. "In speaking to our officers, I have heard that they are getting several calls of mail theft every week."

Postal Inspector's have told EGPD that the increase is a national trend, especially in California, and particularly in the Sacramento region.

To avoid being the victim of identity theft from stolen mail, Bornhoeft offered the following tips:

•  Deposit outgoing mail in a blue mail collection box, at a Post Office, or hand it directly to your mail carrier
•  Take mail out of your box as soon as practical.  Never leave mail in your mailbox overnight.  That is the most common time for thieves to attack
•  If you see a mail theft in progress, or suspicious activity around your mail box, call the Elk Grove Police Dispatch at 916-714-5115
•  To report a mailbox which has been opened or vandalized (not in progress), contact the USPS Postal Inspector at PostalInspectors.uspis.gov or 877-876-2455
•  If you find discarded mail, it can be delivered to any mail carrier, post office, or blue mail collection box.
