For the six-month reporting period ending December 31, 2014, Elk Grove City Council Member Steve Detrick raised $54,110.

According to financial disclosure reports filed with the Elk Grove City Clerk's office, the second-term council member raised a total of $133,110 for 2014. That amount includes $250 in non-monetary contributions and $79,000 in loans made to his campaign committee by Detrick and his wife.

Among expenses listed in Detrick's most recent report were $33,321 for professional services. Those included payments of $6,996 to Churchwell White and two payments to Boutin Jones for $4,771 and $21,553.

The former payment to Boutin Jones was for legal services they performed on behalf of Detrick for his October, 2014 settlement with the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC). That settlement stemmed from a complaint filed with the FPPC that resulted in an investigation that determined Detrick had illegally used $93,483 of his campaign committee's funds.

The $93,483 was paid to Boutin Jones on behalf of Detrick's son Brian Detrick, who was pursuing a defamation suit against Elk Grove resident Connie Conley, who countered with an anti-SLAPP suit. The matter between Conley and Brian Detrick has been subsequently settled.

According to the settlement documents, Detrick told the FPPC his campaign committee had been reimbursed the entire amount. Detrick's 2014 460 reports show no entries indicating the reimbursement of $93,483 has been made. The campaign committee did however reimburse Detrick the $3,500 he paid to the California FPPC for the fine they levied on him.

FPPC Communications Director Jay Wierenga verified Detrick has not reimbursed his campaign committee as noted in the settlement documents.

In an email, Weirenga said, "He [Detrick] is actively working to fulfill that commitment. He has been in contact with us to seek guidance on compliance and on the reimbursement issue. He has been and is being cooperative, accepted responsibility and we are working with him on it."

Among significant contributions listed on Detrick's recent report are the following:
  • Plumber and Pipefitters Local 447, December 3, $5,000
  • ABR Investments, (Christo Bardis, Principal) LLC, December 9, $3,000
  • Fabian Nunez for Treasurer 2018, December 2, $2,500

So sad to see how far Mr Detrick has fallen. Used to be he preached integrity, honesty, etc. Now he is "negotiating a reimbursement plan" and simultaneously, lied to the FPPC about that. Greed is a powerful aphrodisiac. He is just a shell of a person these days with the only buddies he has are campaign contributors. Much different than eight years ago when he had actual residents backing him hoping he could bring back morality to this council. We all failed in that effort. Shame on him and shame on us for thinking he'd be different than Leary or Briggs. SHAME ON US!

"...seeking guidance..." Pay back the money you used illegally and stop lying. How's that for guidance?

A true test of any politician is fulfilling the campaign promises made
while running for office. In that, Mr. Detrick has failed. He put his Developer dollars before the people he promised to serve. Yes, SHAME ON US for thinking he'd be different. The man I see on the dias is not the man I knew eight years ago and the sad part is, he just doesn't GET IT.

I don't agree with how Mr. Detrick acted in this matter but this is exactly why we don't get quality politicians to run for office. Who want to pay nearly a $100k out of their own pocket to fight some outraged citizen suing them for political gain?

Anon 8:34,

Go back and read the story again. Detrick sued a citizen; not the other way around as you stated. So it's even more egregious, in my opinion.

Interesting how Detrick was against the MLS idea, then for it and now wants a 20,000 seat stadium. Did the Nunez $2500 contribution have anything to do with Detrick's changed stance? As much as anyone wants to claim Hume is the Developers Tool, I think the biggest Tool on the Council is Detrick. Silverado $$$, yes vote, Cha Ching! Gil Moore $$$, freeway signs....Cha Ching, Cha Ching!

My mistake. Regardless I don't like how only independently wealthy individuals can play in politics or those who take money from people trying to buy their votes. The one's who really want to make a difference just stay home because nobody wants to deal with this nonsense.

Detrick has been just soooo disappointing. Thought I knew the man, voted for him and bought into his honesty, morality campaigning.

It was all a lie. A proven liar with no morals or ethics, just money.

Having believed in Mr. Detrick, having voted for him, I can only say how truly and deeply disappointed I am. I honestly thought he would be a man of the people, but instead he seems to be just like his predecessor, Mr. Leary.

I find the financial disclosure forms posted on this website to be very confusing sometimes. But to my untrained eye, it should be very easy to spot whether or not he paid back the money he owes. There should be an entry somewhere that says $93,483 nd there isn't. So he didn't pay the money back. Will the FPPC agency fine him again or prosecute him for not doing what he agreed to? He lives in that big house behind that big fancy fence so he has to have money.

And everybody seems to be concerned about where he is getting his campaigning money from. I get it, but looking at it a different way don't those people giving him money know he's just going to use it to pay his fines. I guess they don't care how it's used. But like someone said, he really is bought and paid for and is nothing but a developer tool.

Again, very sad and disappointing. We all had such high hopes for a different kind of councilman, but instead got the same one. I would say I hope that there is somebody out there that will take his place in a few years, but I'm afraid anyone else will be just like him. Oh, well. I guess it can't get any worse.
