It is almost the Fourth of July, and that means one more thing for Elk Grove - blackberries abound!

If you are so inclined, now is the time to find your favorite blackberry bramble and start picking. In just a little more than an hour this morning, two of us visited our favorite bramble and picked five-pounds of the juicy treats.

Brambles are located throughout the city, but for our non-rural residents, they abound along the greenbelts and trails throughout the city. The brambles have lots of thorns, so wear pants and long sleeves when picking and be prepared to get a few thorns in your fingertips as your pick.

The reward is worth a few pin-pricks to your pinkies.

Once you have them, there are endless possibilities on how to enjoy them. They are great eating as is, or you can add them as a sweet topping to yogurt, pancakes or waffles. The possibilities are endless.

Aside from toppings on yogurt, our favorite is blackberry pie. Here are links to a filling recipe, and more importantly, the very good vodka crust recipe.

To paraphrase Ron Popeil, don't delay, act now - supplies are limited!

Thanks for the recipes Dan. Vodka crust? Never heard of that but sounds pretty darn good! As someone who has a BlackBerry attached to my left palm, it is nice to be reminded that they were originally a fruit. And good for you for going out and picking them the old fashioned way!
