Sacramento Regional Transit will be rolling out the Blue Carpet this Sunday and Monday to mark the grand opening of the long awaited Blue Line extension to Cosumnes River College (CRC).

On Sunday festivities will be held at CRC from noon to 5 p.m. and will feature preview rides between the new station and the Meadowview Station, food trucks, live entertainment and kids activities. The activities will be held on the east side of the CRC campus near the Bruceville Road entrance.

The official grand opening will take place on Monday between 9 and 11 a.m. near the Bruceville Road entrance and will include the arrival of the celebratory train. Representing Elk Grove will be Mayor Gary Davis.

Long-term transit plans are said to bring Light Rail as far south as Elk Grove's Southeast Policy Area and the opening of the Blue Line represents a step toward this goal. However, during a special city council meeting in March, Elk Grove City Manager Laura Gill acknowledged Regional Transit was more likely to extend Light Rail to Sacramento International Airport or Roseville prior to extending service into Elk Grove.

Although Regional Transit and Elk Grove City Council members had hoped to feed Blue Line ridership by curtailing e-Tran commuter express bus service to Downtown Sacramento, that plan was scuttled after meeting stiff resistance from riders. Among the many concerns expressed by the riders were increased commute times and the safety and cleanliness of Light Rail trains.

More information and schedules for the Blue Line is available here.

I plan on attempting LR next week after the opening. I'm not optimist that I'll continue to use LR as my primary mode of transportation for my commute. I figure my commute time will nearly double using LR and that's a deal breaker.
