Elk Grove Vice Mayor Steve Ly Breaks 'From District' Promise, Blocks Constituent's Access

January 16, 2016|

One of our favorite sayings from Groucho Marx involved membership in country clubs that would have routinely banned him because of his religious upbringing. Marx' quote, as you may recall, said he would never join a club that would have him as a member. It is a funny, self-effacing and socially biting quote.

Well, we aren't quite sure if Groucho ever joined that club, but if he did, was he ever booted out, and if so, what would be his reaction? We suspect it would be humorous.

While we can't profess to have the wit of Groucho, we can say that Elk Grove News has experienced being kicked out of a club. The club, such as it is that we were kicked out of was Elk Grove Vice Mayor Steve Ly's Twitter account at @Steve4ElkGrove.

Thanks to an EGN reader, we were notified yesterday that our membership in Vice Mayor's Twitter feed was blocked. While we can't say we are surprised, we are mildly amused.

As a little background, the Elk Grove City Council Member [on Twitter] that EGN has been most critical of over the last couple of years is @ElkGrove2020, or for those unfamiliar with Twitter, Elk Grove Mayor Gary Davis. Although we have routinely been the Mayor's biggest critic and have clowned him from time to time, Hiz Honor has not blocked us, and in his own act of moxie, has clowned EGN on occasion.

Since taking his oath over a year ago, not only does the  Vice Mayor Ly demonstrates an incredible lack of intellectual curiosity every couple weeks with his sound-bite comments from the Elk Grove City Council dais, this shows he is unable to withstand any degree of criticism.

Take a lesson from your mentor, Mayor Davis, and Cowboy Up Mr. Ly. Don't exclude any Elk Grove constituent from your Twitter feed, especially those who differ or criticizes you. You are starting to look like former Republican Congressman John Doolittle, whom readers will recall would not speak to the Sacramento Bee because he believed they were biased against him. It is not a good look when a politician performs this sort of I'll-take-my-ball-and-go-home childish behavior.

After all, last month you said in defense of the "from district" selection of council members that you represent every constituent in the city, so you should allow equal access to all on your social media platforms, even us scoundrels at Elk Grove News. By the way Vice Mayor, the next time our garbage, green waste or recycle collectors foul-up, and they will, expect a call - you are one of our five representatives on the Elk Grove City Council who said they serve all constituents.

Last night Vice Mayor Ly was emailed inviting his comments on why EGN was blocked from his Twitter feed. He chose not to respond as of posting time.

Very interesting. I would have assumed that "Steve4ElkGrove" and as Vice Mayor of Elk Grove, he would be open to all comments, positive or negative. Seems to not be the case for him. When I see actions such as this it raises a red flag that all is not as it may seem with Mr. Ly. My personal comment would be "if you can't take the heat, then get out of the kitchen". Very unbecoming Mr. Ly...remember you represent the people of this community and that means ALL of us equally. If you are not able to perform these duties to the expectation level of this community, then step aside. JMHO

As we have come to learn with both Steves, Ly and Detrick, a small mind and a wide mouth usually go together. Wow, shows the character of Ly in a big way to block the press. Who’s next? All of the voters who disagree with him?

"No plant for you, EGN!"

I'm assuming Mr. Ly is a U.S. citizen and took civics in high school. I'm also assuming he is familiar with the U.S. Constitution, the 1st Amendment in particular:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances".

I'm also assuming Mr. Ly may have heard the expression: "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen".

The Vice Mayor is showing his true colors. Weak, ineffectually and dare I say, dumb. Perhaps he needs to consult with Gil "The Big Kahuna" Moore and grow a pair!

Can I have a selfie with you Mr. Ly?

What a woos!!

This guy didn't even defend his specific constituents when the council was discussing increasing the Mellos Roos taxes on his "actual" constituents to pay for the amenities the city can't afford, nor did he even acknowledge they would bear the cost of cost overrides FOREVER. Suen and Hume at least acknowledged they were screwing the Laguna Ridge homeowners.

Now he doesn't like what the press has to say so he's taking his ball and running home to his mummy. What a woos!

He should have called his constituents, informed them what was going on, asked their opinions, shared his findings before the vote and perhaps even asked them to show up and share their opinions with the council before the vote was taken. He needed to represent his constituents; he swore to do so.

Shouldn't be a problem as he has a full-time assistant that we're all paying for to take care of all the city business he can't handle. It's not right that Laguna Ridge homeowners have to pay for city wide amenities that the city can't pay FOREVER.

Ly shows that he has the ability to understand and relate necessary city business about as well as my poodle. He has yet to ask a well though out question or comment to city staff on any project since he took his seat on the dais over a year ago. If fact, he's shown his inability to comprehend what is actually taking place in the city discussions over and over.

What a woos!

Grow up little boy!

LOL Steve L. Couldn't have said it better myself. He's a Ditto councilperson and operates in the dark on most issues.

To: Councilman Ly

Your inability to apparently comprehend the issues before you as a councilman should have all of our citizenry concerned. The fact that you did not acknowledge and defend the inequity of the Mello Roos application to pay for the cost overrides to construct and maintain these amenities exclusively by YOUR district is unconscionable.

The lack of your willingness to accept and deal with public dissent is undemocratic and rather juvenile. Realize that you no longer live in a Pacific Rim 3rd world country. This is the USA. The citizens have the RIGHT and PRIVILEGE to state their dissenting opinions to their elected officials.

I suggest you start applying yourself to this job.

You owe an apology to every one of the property owners in YOUR district for your failure to represent them and to demand a discussion as to why they should bear the inordinate costs to the exclusion of other citizens.

Mr. Lie deserves out utmost in respect because he is a Hmong. All this chatter about his character and intelligence are irrelevant. Gen. Vang would have been proud of him.

I find actions such as this, by our elected Vice Mayor, to be petty and very unbecoming. When you enter the political world that goes with the territory and if you can't accept that, maybe it's time you do us all a favor and resign Mr. Ly. You're my councilperson and that would be my suggestion. We would never have seen actions such as this from Ms. Nancy. Sooo GO Mr. Ly!

Elk Grove is starting to look like a joke of a city.

Let me tell you all, even some of his people don't agree with his methods. We've seen how he is biased. He, of all people should be bringing people together and yet he was the first one to divide groups even among just a small group of community. It's a shame. It's a shame how his wife behaves just like him too. Villans?? Really?! To call out one of your own a villain- you lost my families vote.

Elk grove watch out! STEVE is a biased man. Even he displayed that side of him in his own community who has contributed to his campaigns and we are not even Elk Grove residence. It's a shame his wife has contributed to the villain story. When his character comes into question- guess what he does...he allowed his "supporters" to attack and let his wife support the attackers. How very professional. You lost all my families votes.
