Accused Elk Grove Walmart Armed Robber, Attempted Murder Suspect, Booked Into County Jail




According to information posted on the Sacramento County Sheriff's website, Gilbert Earl Smith, 45, of Sacramento has been booked into the county jail following hospitalized custody. 

Smith was arrested on July 8 after he suffered gunshot wounds in his alleged attempted armed robbery of an armored car in Sacramento. In that incident, Smith allegedly shot and wounded an armored car guard, who then returned fire that wounded Smith. 

Smith is charged with attempted murder, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm by a convict and not eligible for release. His next scheduled court appearance is on Thursday, August 11. 

Prior to his alleged involvement in the July 8 attempted murder and robbery, Smith was arrested on March 9, 2016 by Elk Grove Police on suspicion of an armed robbery at the Elk Grove Boulevard Walmart. Smith, with the suspected assistance of his girlfriend Shenita Marie Barnes who was a manager at the store, gained entry to the cash room on February 9, 2016, and allegedly robbed cash.

Information posted on the Sheriff's website following Smith's March arrest showed bail was set at $1 million bail, but he was ineligible for release. The most current Sheriff's Department posting on Smith shows bail for that arrest at $500,000.
