An Elk Grove grocery store employee was assaulted with pepper spray last night by a suspected shoplifter.

Just before 10 p.m. 30-year old Elijah Ahmad Muhammad  of Fresno was reportedly shoplifting merchandise from the Winco grocery store on Sheldon Road in Elk Grove. When Muhammad left the store without purchasing the merchandise, a loss prevention employee approached him.

When the employee attempted to detain Muhammad, a struggle ensued and he allegedly attempted to spray the employee with pepper spray. Muhammad was eventually detained and arrested by Elk Grove Police.

Muhammad is being held on a $60,000 bail and arraignment is scheduled for December 30.
