Poll Puts Exclamation Point Showing Unpopularity of Elk Grove's Proposed RV Ordinance Change

March 25, 2017 |

Even though the fate of a proposed ordinance aimed at loosening residential recreational vehicle storage in Elk Grove appears doomed, a poll that concluded yesterday added an exclamation point to its unpopularity.

The poll, which was conducted between noon on Monday, March 20 and noon on Friday, March 24 asked readers on this site if they would be willing to allow storage of RV's on driveways in Elk Grove. By a wide margin, respondents opposed the idea.

Asked "Do you support loosening Elk Grove's RV residential storage/parking ordinance," 85, or 71-percent of the 120 respondents said no, they did not. There were 33 participants or 28-percent who supported the proposal and two who were undecided.

The idea to explore a possible change came after the City Council heard public comments from an Elk Grove resident who purchased a motor home only to discover local ordinances prevented her from storing or parking it in her driveway on a permanent basis.

Following a March 8 City Council 4-1 vote, with Council Member Steve Detrick casting the sole dissenting vote, that agreed to explore changing the ordinance, community response to the proposal was swift and almost unanimously in opposition. At their Wednesday, March 22 meeting, Detrick noted there were close to 100 emails received by council opposing the change.

Recognizing the unpopularity, the City Council, who is still obliged to hear the matter, said it would be discussed at the April 12 meeting with indications by Council Member Pat Hume and Mayor Steve Ly saying they, along with Detrick, would support maintaining the current ordinance.

Noting Detrick's original opposition to the proposal, Hume noted, "I would say the Vice Mayor's weather vane was most accurate."

It sounds like the City Council has heard from many directions that this change should not be made. We need to continue being vocal to ensure that a very few loud voices to not control the debate. Allowing RVs in the front of houses would be a terrible step backward for our City.

It sounds like the City Council has heard the majority feeling of our residents that this proposal would be a step backward for Elk Grove. We need to ensure that the very few who are asking for this do not control the debate as it would be a terrible step backward for our City.

Sounds like the current ordinance is overstepping on residents' property rights.
