Among its suburban peers in the Sacramento region, Elk Grove earned respectable marks, but failed to make it to a list of California's top 100 suburbs.

The ranking, which was compiled by Niche.com gave Elk Grove an "A" rating making it the seventh best out of 20 Sacramento area suburbs measured.  Elk Grove earned an "A-" for public schools; "B-" housing; "A"good for families; "B-" crime and safety; and "A+" for diversity.

Among the peer suburbs, Davis earned top ranking based on the strength of six  "A" grades,a "C+" for housing, and a "B-" for crime and safety. Following Davis in the top five were Gold River, Folsom, El Dorado Hills, and Rocklin respectively.

The Sacramento Business Journal's slideshow presentation on the local rankings featured a photo representing one of each of the suburbs' strengths. For Elk Grove, which earned an "A+" for diversity, Mayor Steve Ly was displayed as the symbol representing the best of the city.

In the larger poll of the best 100 suburbs in California, Elk Grove was not ranked. Earning the top spot on the list of California's best suburb was Los Altos Hills and the vast majority of favored suburbs were in the Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco metropolitan areas.

The only communities in the Sacramento area and Central Valley in the top 100 were Davis, Gold River, Folsom, and El Dorado Hills which were ranked in 9th, 68th, 74th, and 99th place respectively.
