Two Dogs Shot, Killed by Elk Grove Police After They Attack Jogger, Animal Services Officer

Two German Shepherd dogs were shot and killed after they attacked a jogger. and threatened animal service and police officers.

On the morning of Thursday, June 22 Elk Grove animal services officers responded to the 9400 block of Misty River Way regarding two aggressive German Shepherds that were running loose and had bitten a jogger on the calf. The responding ASO officers approached the dogs in an effort to control them both dog canines barked and bared their teeth.

After efforts to control the dogs failed, additional assistance from Elk Grove Police was requested. Responding officers arrived and encountered the same aggressive behavior, and attempted to use non-lethal bean bags in an effort to gain control.

After the effort failed, both of the dogs charged at the officer and based on the aggressive behavior,and the threat to public safety to a nearby school and park, the officer shot one of the dogs. The other dog remained aggressive and continued to pose an imminent threat to public safety. Another officer shot the other dog and they both succumbed to their injuries.

The injured jogger was contacted and did not require medical treatment at the scene. Additional follow-up is being conducted to determine if these dogs had been involved in at least two attacks on animals earlier that day.
