January 15, 2018 |

On Monday, January 15, 2018 a first-of-its-kind march was held to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Elk Grove, California. The afternoon march was held along a route on Elk Grove Boulevard between the Elk Grove Public Library and Old Town Elk Grove.

The march was organized in part by the Sacramento chapter of Black Lives Matter and several local activist.

Among the speakers were Elk Grove resident Sonia Lewis of the Sacramento chapter of BLM, Sharie Wilson, owner of a business in Old Town Elk Grove targeted by hate messages, the Rev. Les Simmons of South Sacramento Christian Center, and Christopher Hoffman, Superintendent of the Elk Grove Unified School District.

Among elected officials on hand for the event, which drew over 200 participants, was Cosumnes Community Services District Director, Orlando Fuentes. Elk Grove Mayor Steve Ly and Vice Mayor Darren Suen were said, by one speaker, to have been invited to join the march but did not attend.

Below is a recording of those speeches.

Reminiscent of the Trump Inauguration crowd size controversy, there also seems to be conflicting estimates given on the size of the Elk Grove MLK parade. The EGN title says "hundreds" attended, and Fox40 in their evening news broadcast says "dozens" attended. Poor Dr. King just can't seem to get a fair shake!
