MLK Day March Planned For Elk Grove

January 14, 2018 |

In what appears to be an 11th hour effort, a march commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day has been organized for Elk Grove.

According to event information posted on Facebook, the Monday, January 15 march will start at the Elk Grove Public Library on the corner of Elk Grove Boulevard and Elk Grove-Florin Road. The route for the march will be on the sidewalk along Elk Grove Boulevard eastwards toward Old Town Elk Grove to Dream Girls Beauty Salon.

The event is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. The event information notes "in light of the recent headline-making racially-charged events and the ongoing denials, backwards accusations, and verbal assaults and threats here, in the heart of Elk Grove, We Are Marching."

Over the last several months Elk Grove has been rocked by several racially-tinged events that have generated self-examination and widespread community discussion. The most recent discussion happened at the Wednesday, January 10 meeting of the Elk Grove City Council.

Organizers note that the region's more prominent MLK march will happen on the morning of Monday, January 14 in Sacramento. Organizers of the Elk Grove event encourage those who attend the Sacramento event to "have lunch and a brief recharge and hustle straight on down to Elk Grove."

This event is believed to be the first MLK march in Elk Grove. More information on the event can be viewed here
