Sacramento LAFCO Commissioner Loses Cool, Attempts to Silence Elk Grove Citizen

Elk Grove Council Member Pat Hume loses cool

February 10, 2018|

At the Wednesday, February 7 meeting of the Sacramento Local Agency Formation Commission, where an expansion of the city of Elk Grove by about two square miles was approved, the chair of the commission attempted to silence a critic.

Elk Grove citizen Michael Monasky criticized Sacramento LAFCO Chair and Elk Grove City Council Member Pat Hume. Monasky, a frequent critic of Hume, accused the longtime council member of personally profiting from the expansion of Elk Grove city limits.

During this meeting, the LAFCO commission approved expanding the city by about two square miles. The so-called sphere of influence application, which is an administrative step toward eventual annexation, was initiated by private developers and not the city.

While Monasky was leveling his accusations during his public comment, Hume spoke over him saying "false" several times. At one point Monasky's microphone was turned off, and LAFCO Commissioner and Sacramento County Supervisor Susan Peters  said "I think you should sit down Mr. Molkasey [sic]."

One of Monasky's points was that Hume should have recused himself from proceedings. In recent months Hume had recused himself from various deliberations on the Elk Grove City Council regarding the proposed Wilton Rancheria casino facility.

When asked during a council meeting, Hume explained that he recused himself out of "an abundance of caution"  and against the advice of Elk Grove City Attorney Jonathan Hobbs who said that he did not have to do so. Hume said his wife's ex-husband's name was on the development agreement for the adjacent Outlet Collection at Elk Grove shopping center, which is also directly adjacent to the area under consideration Wednesday night (see  Hume's video explanation here).

Notwithstanding Hume's interruptions and the attempted dismissal by Peters, Monasky pressed on. The entire encounter can be viewed below.

This is a stellar example of the truth hurts, with Mike Monasky speaking truth to power. Pat Hume losing his cool like that means only one thing, Monasky hit not only a major nerve, but I would bet Hume’s jugular veins were about to pop out.

Over the years, we have witnessed Hume losing his cool many times, but this one rates right up there when Hume attacked Bob Felts from the dais during an Elk Grove City Council meeting.

And then Hume calling up a “public member,” aka Elk Grove Vice Mayor Darren Suen, who hadn’t put in a speaker slip and let him go on for five minutes. What a crock!

Hume sat through all the developers’ consultants who pad his campaign account, was eating it up like the cat who ate the canary, and then Monasky’s comments made him spit up feathers because to Hume, in this case, “The truth hurts more than it normally does when it was the lies you wanted to hear.”
