Two suspects were taken into custody yesterday after allegedly shoplifting from Elk Grove retail stores and being found in possession of illegal drug

s. The first incident happened at the Elk Grove Boulevard Walmart store when Surriell Dwayne Briggs, 29, of Modesto, California was detained after being observed stealing merchandise. A record check showed Briggs to be on probation and had an active arrest warrant.

A search of Briggs led to the discovery of a controlled substance and narcotic paraphernalia. Briggs was released from custody after posting bail.

The other incident happened at the Old Navy Store on West Stockton Boulevard when Joseph Gabriel, 52, of Sacramento, left the store without paying for the merchandise. Responding Elk Grove Police officers located Gabriel in a vehicle a short distance away.

A record check revealed Gabriel was on probation. A probation search of the vehicle led to the discovery of the stolen merchandises and narcotic paraphernalia.

Gabriel is being held at the Sacramento County Jail on a bail of $560,000. Arraignment will on Wednesday, August 15.
