Hume targets Elk Grove Democratic voters, spends big on mailers, TV ads

October 26, 2018 |

In what could be a sign of a competitive race for Elk Grove's District 2 seat, Republican incumbent council member Pat Hume has sent a mailer targeting registered Democratic voters.

In the piece which started showing up today in the mailboxes of Elk Grove Democrats, Hume has taken a subtle approach in the appeal. While he does not mention his party affiliation, he does feature two prominent elected Democratic legislators.

The picture features Hume, along with Elk Grove Councilmember Steve Detrick, Assemblymember Jim Cooper, and U.S. Rep. Dr. Ami Bera. Hume and Detrick are Republicans, while Bera and Cooper, who served with Hume and Detrick on the Elk Grove City Council, are Democrats.

Although Hume has served three terms starting in 2006 and was not challenged in 2014, he has nonetheless faced an upstart campaign waged by political newcomer Andres Ramos. A longtime Elk Grove resident and recent law school graduate, Ramos is part of the so-called Team Elk Grove slate formed by Elk Grove Mayor Steve Ly, who is himself facing a tough reelection fight being waged by Tracie Stafford and Elk Grove Vice Mayor Darren Suen.

Ly's Democratic Team Elk Grove includes Ramos, Orlando Fuentes, who is challenging Elk Grove District 4 Councilmember Stephanie Nguyen; Cosumnes Community Services District candidates Rod Brewer, who is an incumbent, and

Bera and Cooper were unnamed in the mailer. Hume's website does not list endorsements from either official, and a spokesperson for the Bera campaign said the congressman does not offer endorsements in local races.

In a separate campaign matter, Hume's most recent financial disclosure report for the one month period ending October 20, shows he has spent a large portion of his campaign fund on the production and purchase of TV advertising.

Through his campaign consulting firm TAB Communications, Hume spent $31,275 for TV ads and $40,646 for mailers. Hume, who has not used any social media platforms as an elected official, spent $4,747 on Facebook advertising.

During the reporting period raised $21,450 bringing his annual contributions to $75,850. Among the largest during the reporting period were from Reynolds & Brown, Concord, California; Northstate Building Industry, Sacramento; and Taylor Morrison of California, Roseville, each of whom gave $5,000.

Additionally, Hume received money from organized labor including the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 340, Sacramento, $2,500 and Laborers Local 185, Sacramento, $250. Interestingly, earlier this year Hume accepted $2,000 from Associated Builders and Contractors, Northern California Chapter, Livermore, California; who advocates for non-union building contractors.
