Elk Grove News Minute - Beware of Elk Grove's Jobs Creation Claims

Elk Grove economic development director Darrell Doan takes credit for phantom jobs. |
During the January 9, 2019, Elk Grove City Council meeting, the city’s economic development director Darrell Doan made numerous claims. At least one was verifiable, but the rest were of a dubious nature.

EGN should have played some Jimmy Durante tap dance music in the background. It doesn't matter, 2,000, 20,000, 30,000 jobs, what we are seeing is a tap dance to save one particular job!

Did anyone else notice how much Darrell Doan bragged about himself? In light of the announcement regarding the hiring of City Manager Jason Behrmann, maybe this was Doan's job retention interview.

Also, the Council's response that this was "the best presentation in 12 years" as one said, apparently the Elk Grove City Council's bar is set very low when it comes to the economic development report.

This report was filled if not with outright false facts, it certainly was filled with alternative facts, and the four men bought it hook, line and sinker.

"If they don’t stand for something, they will fall for anything."

Although Mr. Doan's resume says he came to the city from back east, Baltimore if I am not mistaken, after listening to his presentation the other evening, it seems more likely he came riding into town from Houston and the executive suites of Enron.

Mr. Doan job numbers appears to be mimicking Enron's practice of revenue recognition. Put another way as it relates to jobs creation, he is counting jobs that might be created years from now. Enron had phantom revenue and Doan has phantom jobs.

We all know how Enron unfolded. Too bad Joe and Jane Taxpayers will again take the bullet for fraud.

Here’s what struck me about Darrell Doan’s presentation: All his talk about the Apple jobs and the expansion. Even if you live in a Truman Show bubble, you know that Apple is very tight lipped about anything going on within the company. Apple baulks on any outside public relations, or in this case, may frown on our city’s economic development director’s comments about Apple that were used to pump up his job numbers’ report.

And in reality, aren’t most of the Elk Grove Apple jobs really minimum wage jobs contracted from a company called Volt? Something Doan didn’t even mention. And wouldn’t part of his job be to fully inform the Elk Grove City Council?

Who supplies the Paul Harvey version of the city’s economic development report?
