City Council to formally reconnect Elk Grove transit services with Sac RT, kill MV Transportation's eTran system

After a 13 year breakup, the City of Elk Grove is on the verge of reuniting with Sacramento Regional Transit to provide transit services for city residences.

At their Wednesday, February 27 meeting, the Elk Grove City Council will consider a proposal from the city transit manager Mike Costa to not renew their agreement with MV Transporation, the contractor the operated the city's often maligned eTran bus services, and contract with Sac RT. Although the change needs to be formalized by the vote of the city council, at their December 12, 2018 meeting the council members instructed Costa to prepare a contract for their consideration.

Prior to 2006, the city had contracted with Sac RT to provide bus services but was dissatisfied and put the contract out to bid. The city selected MV Transporation to operate the eTran system.

That system was plagued by the failure of many of the hybrid buses the city purchased. Those buses were scrapped following their continued failure resulting in the multi-million dollar loss of taxpayer money.

Even though the city continued to experience ongoing operational problems with MV Transporation, their contract was renewed even when they were the highest bidder in one of the renewal bids. During this time MV Transporation regularly contributed to council members campaigns.

According to the agreement reached between the city and Sac RT, the city's current route system will be maintained, including the popular express buses to downtown Sacramento and will start on July 1. Costa estimates the five-year contract will cost $36 million, which reflects a slight saving from projected costs if the city had contracted with MV.

Wednesday night's meeting starts at 6 p.m.
