After displaying sign, another person indicates interest in Elk Grove District 3 city council race

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Or in this case, a sign affixed to the back of a clipboard has generated speculation that another candidate could be entering the 2020 race for the District 3 seat of the Elk Grove City Council.

At last night's Elk Grove City Council meeting, District 3 resident Lynn Wheat displayed a clipboard visible to the five council members and on the live video feed with a sign that read "Lynn Wheat District 3 2020."

Speaking during public comment, Wheat displayed the sign without comment on the possibility she would enter the 2020 race. Wheat, a regular fixture at council meeting who scrutinizes city business, ran in the first directly elected mayoral election in 2012.

Wheat was reportedly traveling and not available for comment at the time of this posting.

Although the election is more than 17 months away, the District 3 seat has one declared candidate, Maureen Craft who announced last month. A Democrat, Craft ran against incumbent Republican Steve Detrick in 2016.

Detrick was first elected to the District 3 seat in 2008 defeating incumbent Mike Leary. Although Detrick has not announced intentions for 2020, he missed several meetings earlier this years because of work considerations and has not engaged in campaign fundraising activities as has been his practice.
