Assemblymember Jim Cooper helps Elk Grove Food Bank secure $4 million in state funding

With the expected approval of the State of California's 2020 budget by Gov. Gavin Newsom, the Elk Grove Food Bank Services will be the receipient of a $4 million grant.

“This is a dream come true for our organization. I cannot express how grateful we are to Assemblymember [Jim] Cooper (D - Elk Grove) and the City of the Elk Grove for this tremendous gift," Elk Grove Food Bank Executive Director, Marie Jachino. "This funding will make a profound difference in our ability to fill the need and inspire hope for so many people in our community."

Not only will the grant help the Elk Grove-based organization fund its expanding menu of services to the nearby community, it will help with one of their challenges over the last several years - finding a permanement domicile.

Cooper, who is the the Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee No. 4 on State Administration, applauds the Legislature for supporting his effort to secure the EGFBS funding. Established in 1974, the EGFBS grew from providing meals for those experiencing food insecurity to offering 16 programs serving over 5,700 community members.

“I am very encouraged by this year’s budget and am especially proud of the investments the Legislature passed to support Elk Grove and am hopeful Governor Newsom will also support this investment,” Cooper said. “Funding to relocate the Elk Grove Food Bank to a larger and more accessible location is vital to families struggling with hunger and to the homeless in our area.”

Newsom has until June 30, 2019, to sign the budget, which includes the one-time payment to Elk Grove Food Bank Services to find a permanent home.
