For the last several election cycles California's 7th Congressional district has been a battlefield between Democratic and Republican candidates. While Rep. Ami Bera enjoyed a relatively easy reelection campaign in 2018 in part because of the so-called Blue Wave, 2020 could be a different landscape.

While I agree that our district is still swing, or more accurately moderate, the Republicans still has a steep hill to climb. Aside from having to recruit a candidate with name recognition, they would have to find a more moderate Republican who would not walk in lockstep with Mr. Trump.

If this GOP candidate did not walk hand-in-hand with the President, the Trump Republican base will probably not go to the polls, much less draw the ire of Mr. Trump and party regulars. This moderate Republican could steal some votes from Dr. Bera, but probably not enough to sway the election for Republicans.
