Elk Grove, Cosumnes Community Service District hit with unspecified cyber attack, FBI assistance sought



A press released this afternoon from the Elk Grove Police Department revealed that the City of Elk Grove and the Cosumnes Community Services District have notified law enforcement of an alleged cybercrime.

The police press released did not reveal the nature of the cybercrime. In response, the police have notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation and are seeking their assistance in the ongoing investigation.

Although the statement did not identify the nature of the attack, it said, "Staff from both the City of Elk Grove and the Cosumnes Community Services District are assisting with the investigation along with reviewing their processes and security measures."

In July the city's email system appeared was penetrated with several people in the community received email from a variety of city staff including city attorney Jonathan Hobbs. At that time the city released a statement outlining their security procedures and noted "The City of Elk Grove is proactive on installing software and patches by testing them as they are released, and then rolling them out to our various desktops and systems."
