Elk Grove News Minute - Will Mayor Steve Ly move to strengthen his position?

With the switch to by-district elections in 2020, Elk Grove is in the midst of a subtle political change. With councilmembers elected by-district voters only, Mayor Steve Lee remains the only councilmember elected citywide.

Finally getting by-district voting was one of the goals back in 2009 when the city of Elk Grove Charter Commission was formed. The forming of this commission was citizen driven and the Elk Grove City Council acquiesced kicking and screaming.

One of the other goals was electing our own mayor. That was the only thing that came out of the charter commission. The second being by-district voting which was rejected. The third was the one with the most contention, and one that finally killed the charter making it to the ballot.

The Republicans on the Elk Grove City council didn’t want any charter to include the State of California's prevailing wage mandates when the Blue Wave of the majority of advocates wanted all three.

Two down, one to go!

I agree with EGN, the ultimate goal of Ly appears to be building a coalition of three that will vote themselves full-time salaries and to begrudgingly support whatever Democratic Party items he had to promise the other two in order to get his salary approved.

In his previous campaigns, Ly flew his slow-moving crop duster over the town with a trailing banner endorsing other candidates who were part of the Democratic coalition. How did that work out for him?

It's impossible to imagine someone who can raise enough cash to mount a serious challenge to Ly. But those other two seats are gonna be like hand-to-hand combat in the trenches! I love the smell of political napalm in the morning!

This week's commentary regarding the dynamics between Mr. Ly and the other four members reminded us of what was unspoken during the entire proceedings and for that matter, over the last several years. We have to be certain that Mr.'s Detrick, Hume, and Suen and Ms. Nguyen had to understand the implications of having their status lowered from being elected citywide on just a quarter of the voting public. Given their obvious vitriol towards the Mayor, this change must have been particular grating.

If Mr. Ly does indeed seeks to oust Mr. Suen and get a buddy in the district three seat as suggested, he has his work cut out for himself. Difficult, but not impossible.
