VIDEO - Ali Moua announces candidacy, will challenge Darren Suen for Elk Grove City Council District 1

Surrounded by family and supporters, this morning Mr. Ali Moua announced he will challenge incumbent and fellow Democrat Darren Suen for the District 1 seat on the Elk Grove City Council.

Moua made the announcement in front of this Lakeside neighborhood residence with over 100 people in attendance.

Leading up to his statement, Moua was introduced by his wife Tou Vang and Maureen Craft, who is running for Elk Grove's District 3 seat on the city council. Also appearing in support of Mou was the president of the Elk Grove-South County, Karif Lawrence.

In his presentation Moua did not layout a specific platform for this candidacy, nor did he touch on one issue of concern for District 1 voters, California Northstate University's $900 million 400-bed hospital proposed in the Stonelake neighborhood. Suen, who has come out in support of the projects, has been repeatedly criticized for his stance, particularly by Lakeside and Stonelake residents.

Although he didn't mention his opponent by name, Moua did reference another issue where Suen was criticized, gerrymandering. When it became apparent the city would conduct by-district elections in 2020, Suen unsuccessfully attempted to have the Stonelake and Lakeside neighborhoods drawn out of District 1.

"I will protect the rights of the voters from any Gerrymandering, or unconstitutional practices," Moua told the audience.

In a sign of the campaign's preparedness, campaign lawn signs and t-shirts were already on hand. Starting this year, all four city councilmembers will be elected on a by-district basis with the District 1 and 3 seats appearing in the ballot.

Below are a video of Mr. Moua's entire speech, and audio that includes introductions from Vang and Craft.
