'They line their pockets' - District 3 candidate Singh condemns city councilmembers, rival Spease over cash from Elk Grove's garbage hauler

If he were to tweak the familiar saying of garbage in, garbage out, Elk Grove District 3 city council candidate Amandeep Singh might say about Republic Services is garbage money in, garbage contract out.

In a recently posted campaign video on YouTube, Singh offered criticism of Elk Grove's garbage hauler, Republic Services. Even though the video is benignly titled Elk Grove Solid Waste Utility, Singh criticizes Republic Service's use of campaign contributions to Elk Grove City Councilmembers to increase fees for ratepayers.

In his presentation, Singh displayed California 460 Forms highlighting cash contributions from Republic Services for Mayor Steve Ly, and councilmembers Steve Detrick, Pat Hume, Darren Suen, and Stephanie Nguyen. Singh also pointed out that one of his four campaign rivals, Kevin Spease, received money from them.

"They have set up a system every time any public official from the City of Elk Grove needs election donations, they pay them and they line their pockets," Singh stated.

Singh rhetorically asks "what does that mean?" He summarized that the few thousand dollars all five city council members received from Republic Services are more important to them than the $3 million-plus in new fees they burdened ratepayers with compared to ratepayers in Sacramento County.

In his closing argument, Singh pointed out his campaign has been self-funded and from individual donations from friends and relatives.

"I am not asking money from any special groups, or developers or any companies like these," Singh said. "Let's start saving our $3 million that we give to this company annually."
