It’s been a couple weeks since my last Notebook here on ElkGroveNews.net and most of that is because the family and I took a week to enjoy the gold country around Angels Camp. Big Trees State Park is a real treasure especially if you enjoy camping and hiking (watch out for the bears…a momma bear was spotted with cubs just before we arrived). Plus the Sequoias are absolutely mammoth.
The boys and I played Greenhorn Creek Golf Club, which for
the $80 green fee was a good value. The course is challenging without being
overly difficult and they manicure the course so that the fairways have great
lies and your ball will roll cleanly on the greens. I am a walker on the
course, but this one I needed a cart because of the change of elevation and the
holes are spread out amongst a nice housing development.
There are a few holes that are some of the most beautifully
laid out golf holes in our area. It cuts through many trees and up and down the
foothills of the Sierra Nevada. And, it’s brim with wildlife, especially deer. During
my round I spotted two bucks and lots of does with a couple fawns hanging
around. Fortunately, they never got in my way (nor did I in theirs).
If you are looking for a new golf challenge, Greenhorn Creek
is a must-play.
Quick Hits …
Several things to report this week involving Elk Grove-based
athletes and we start with one of the best female basketball players we’ve
produced, Franklin High School graduate Kim Manlangit. She was recently
named the new girls basketball coach at her alma mater.
In her playing days the 5-2 point guard was one of the best
dribblers and passers around. She struggled through knee injuries, yet played
well at Delta College and at UC-San Diego. In recent years she returned to Elk
Grove and was Larry Price’s assistant coach in 2016 when the Elk Grove girls
went to the State Division II Championship Game.
Now, a doctor in physical therapy, Manlangit gets an
opportunity to coach the Wildcats in her spare time.
Ryan “Rowdy” Tellez is now a member of the Milwaukee
Brewers. The infield in Toronto, led by Vladimere Guerrero, Jr., was just too
crowded and Tellez was becoming the odd man out in his second full MLB season
in Canada.
He was traded last Wednesday for a pair of pitchers.
“This team is in first place, and I’m here to contribute and
play whatever role they need me to play,” Tellez told Milwaukee reporters after
the trade. “I know the National League is a little bit different than the
American League. There are more pinch-hit opportunities and things like that.
It’s something I have to understand and learn. But I’m trying to win a World
Series with this team and help any way I can to get them there.”
He hit a career-high .283 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs
in 2020.
Other Elk Grove H.S. grads in baseball:
Derek
Hill is back in Toledo (AAA-East) in the Tiger organization, as is pitcher Matt
Manning (Sheldon H.S.). Manning had glimmers of excellence in his five
starts for Detroit. He was 1-3 with a 6.95 ERA.
J.D.
Davis had two doubles and a homer in a rehab game with the AAA Syracuse
Mets on Tuesday. He’s just a few days away from returning to New York. He took
a pitched ball off his left hand in the season’s second week and has been
recovering ever since.
Dylan
Carlson is batting .258 with 7 home runs and 31 RBI’s at the All-Star Break
with the St. Louis Cardinals.
He’s leading NASCAR’s Cup Series in playoff points with four
wins and a bunch of top-5 finishes in 2021. For that, Elk Grove’s Kyle
Larson Wednesday was rewarded with a two-year contract extension by
Hendrick Motorsports. He’ll continue to drive the No. 5 Chevrolet around the
NASCAR tracks with Hendrick Automotive Group as his primary sponsor.
