As Elk Grove announces zoo relocation option, Steinberg says not so fast - 'We love our Sacramento zoo'

Although it cannot be called a shot across the bow, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg is not giving up keeping the Sacramento Zoo in Sacramento.

Steinberg's statement, which was posted on Twitter, made it clear that he would not let the zoo move to its younger southern neighbor without at least a discussion before the Sacramento City Council. Steinberg said, "I will place this on the agenda very quickly so we can have a full council and community about what it would take" to keep the zoo in Sacramento.

Before yesterday's announcement that Elk Grove and the Sacramento Zoological Society would explore moving the institution, there were discussions to relocate the facility to several possible sites, including North Natomas and the Sleep Train Arena site. Even though a zoo move had been studied, it never appeared as a hearing item before the Sacramento City Council.

Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen told EGN that as a courtesy, she called Steinberg and Sacramento City Councilmember Angelique Ashby yesterday before the formal announcement was made. While Ashby supports the move noting it is good for the region, Steinberg did not respond to her communications as he was in meetings, according to Singh-Allen.

"She understands [the] regional approach and big picture," Singh-Allen said.

While Steinberg said while he wants to work on retaining the zoo, he also acknowledged many challenges facing Sacramento while it tries to expand its creative economy. He noted, "the zoo question ought to be considered in this broader context."

There has always been room at William Land park an in Natomas but the Sacramento Mayor an Council has refused to do anything other than to complain. If the zoo doesn’t move to Elk Grove then maybe this will get Sacramento politicians off their rear end to do the right thing by relocating an expanding the zoo as it is needed. If they don’t Elk Grove seems to be on track to give the zoo an uplift an make it a great place to see lots of animals instead of a very old zoo that has seen it’s better days an stop the excuses. The zoo located in Elk Grove would be a great added family attraction an destination. Congratulations to our city staff, Council an Mayor for its continued work to make Elk Grove a better place to live.
