Forum scheduled for Sacramento County District Attorney candidates

One of the more interesting Sacramento County races on next June's primary ballot is the contest to replace Sacramento County District Attorney Ann Marie Schubert. The race, which has already seen one candidate drop out, will feature the other two candidates, Thien Ho and Alana Mathews.

The Monday, October 25 forum is organized by Sacramento-based Asian Resources Inc. and conducted at their headquarters at 6270 Elder Creek Road in Sacramento. The is outdoors, and CDC COVID guidelines will be followed.

The 2022 race will mark the end of an era anchored by former District Attorney Jan Scully, who held office for 20 years ending in 2014. When Scully decided not to run, her hand-picked successor, Schubert, was easily elected in 2014 and reelected in 2018.

When Schubert decided to run for California Attorney General earlier this year, she endorsed Sacramento County assistant district attorney Paris Coleman. With Coleman's exit from the race in August, the Scully-Schubert era will come to an end.

While the Scully-Shubert era is ending, both candidates will bring ties to the DA office - Ho is currently the assistant chief deputy attorney who successfully prosecuted the East Area Rapist-Golden State serial killer. Mathews, who spent eight years in the Sacramento County District Attorney's office and now works for the Prosecutors Alliance of California, a coalition of reform-minded prosecutors working to promote criminal justice reform statewide and teaches at McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento.

Hosting the forum is recently retired TV news reporter Lonnie Wong and, according to ARI information, "questions have been curated for candidates." Additionally, if time permits, the audience will be permitted to ask questions.
