Rep. Doris Matsui announces run for reelection in newly configured CA District 7

In a statement issued this morning, Rep. Doris Matsui has announced she will seek reelection in the newly configured CA District 7. Matsui is currently representing California's 6th Congressional District, which includes Downtown Sacramento.

Matsui's announcement comes after last night's approval by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission of the final proposed district maps for the California Board of Equalization, California State Senate, Calfornia Assembly, and the U.S. House of Representatives.

The 6th District has changed substantially with the removal of Sacramento's Land Park area, where Matsui maintains her district residency and Downtown Sacramento. The 6th District will now include the eastern Sacramento County politically moderate to conservative communities of  Antelope, Arden-Arcade, Carmichael, Orangevale, and Rancho Cordova.

“I have been honored and humbled to serve the people in the heart of Sacramento as their representative in Congress for so many years,” Matsui said in her announcement. “We’ve accomplished so much together, and I pledge to continue to stand up for the people of Sacramento and the Sacramento region’s priorities and values."

Had Matsui had sought reelection in the 6th District, she would have faced a substantially different electorate than the district's current composition. The new 7th District boundaries include parts of the previous 6th district and West Sacramento, south Sacramento, Elk Grove, Galt, Wilton, and all of the far southern portions of Sacramento County's Delta area.

The 7th District is represented by Matsui's Democratic colleague Dr. Ami Bera, who was first elected in 2012. Bera has not yet announced his intentions.

For the first time since California entered the union, following the 2020 census, the state lost a congressional district even though the population grew. Instead of districts contracting as they have done historically, the loss of the seat has dramatically shifted congressional boundaries.

It will be off great interest to see how Dr. Bera reacts. Will he now run for the other congressional seat?

For being congressional colleagues of the same party, I always found it surprising they rarely made joint appearances together. I believe it was in 2016 when Dr. Bera was challenged by Sheriff Scott Jones, that it was a Bay Area representative, not Ms. Masui who came to campaign with him.

Perhaps Rep. Matsui scared off by the scandals of Dr. Bera's father.
