Today Elk Grove City Councilmember Stephanie Nguyen formally announced her candidacy for the 10th California Assembly District. Nguyen joins fellow Democratic candidates Pastor Tecoy Porter and Sacramento City Councilmember Eric Guerra, and there are no declared Republicans in the race.

Nguyen, the executive director of Sacraemto-based Asian Resources Inc., has served as the District 4 Elk Grove City Council since her 2017 appointment. In 2018 she won a four-year term.

“I’m proud of the work we started here in Elk Grove – keeping our neighborhoods vibrant and safe, but I know I can do more for our region in the State Assembly,” Nguyen said in her announcement.

Today's announcement comes after District 9 California Assemblymember Jim Cooper announced that he would run for Sacramento County Sheriff last week instead of seeking another term in the 10th District. Cooper has mentored Nguyen in her political career, and she deferred her formal entry until Cooper announced his decision last week.

Unless a viable Republican enters the race, Guerra and Nguyen are favored to advance out of the June primary. With Nguyen's entry, the District 4 seat of the Elk Grove City Council will be an open seat this year.

Nguyen's Assembly candidacy is supported by Cooper, California State Senator Dr. Richard Pan, California Assemblymember Kevin McCarty and Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen. Neither Nguyen nor Guerra could secure the California Democratic party's endorsement for the June primary, but if both advance to the November general election, the party can reconsider an endorsement.

Outside the press release, Nguyen added, "I’m running to succeed Assemblymember Jim Cooper in the new 10th district because I know what’s important to voters in the district and how to get the job done. I am a trusted voice who’s lived in Elk Grove for the past 18 years and grew up in the Lemon Hill area, where I still have family and where I go to work every day helping thousands of families by giving them the support needed to become self-sufficient. That's why Assemblymembers Jim Cooper and Kevin McCarty have both endorsed my campaign. They know I will continue to be a fierce advocate for our communities in the State Assembly.”
