Los Rios College teachers union pans Hume for trying 'to dupe voters' with ballot designation as a teacher

The collective bargaining unit for the Los Rios Community College District panned Elk Grove City Councilmember and Sacramento County Supervisorial candidate Pat Hume after he, in their words, "tried to dupe voters."

The criticism came after a story published by the Sacramento Bee that reported Hume, a 16-year city council member, attempted to include teacher as one of his occupations on his ballot designation. The Bee said Hume obtained a substitute teacher credential on February 1 and had taught two sessions at an Elk Grove Unified School District elementary school.

Once that occupation was challenged, according to the Los Rios Teachers Federation of Teachers, he was compelled to remove the designation. The county elections department shows Hume listed (page 57) as a councilmember and small businessman.

"After what classroom teachers have gone through over the past two years, it is appalling that a career politician tried to fool the voters during the campaign season," Jason Newman, President of Los Rios Teachers Federation of Teachers said.

The race to replace long-serving District 5 Supervisor Don Nottoli has attracted seven candidates. Former Elk Grove Mayor Steve Ly and Cosumnes Community Services District Director Jaclyn Moreno are other notable candidates.

In their press statement, the Los Rios teacher's union said, "This is exactly why teachers are supporting Jaclyn Moreno for County Supervisor."

Responding to the teachers' union claims, Hume's campaign consultant Tab Berg said, "Newman's claim is plain false." Berg said Hume voluntarily made the change.

"We agreed with County Counsel that 'substitute teacher' was more accurate, but that would have exceeded the 3-word limit," Berg said in an email. "Rather than wrestling in the mud with sponsors of our opponent, we worked with the Registrar to find a solution - we didn't host protests or threaten to sue them."

With seven candidates in the June 7 primary, it is unlikely that any candidate would surpass the 50-percent mark in popular votes to be declared the winner. The top two finishers in the primary will advance to a run-off in the November general election.

Moreno has made mental health one of the keystones of her campaign criticized Hume's attempt to identify as a teacher on the ballot.

"Someone spending a couple of days in [a] classroom and trying to call himself a teacher? It's disrespectful, and it's deceitful." Moreno said.

Pat Hume made the "voluntary change." Why did Hume think it was okay to put he was a "teacher" in the first place? Who gave him the advice to deceive?

I call BS and political spin trying to sell "the candidate!" Kudos to Los Rios Teachers Federation of Teachers for calling out Hume's attempt at political propaganda from Jump Street as we enter the season of lies.

Quote from Hume on his first campaign when he wouldn’t take honest advice, “Whose name is on the balloons?”
