First of the primary season mailers start appearing in Elk Grove mailboxes; candidate notes attack ads funded by big oil

With a little over two weeks until ballots appear in California voters' mailboxes, mailers are now making their way to Elk Grove voters.

In one of several competitive races centered in Elk Grove, a mailer for California Senate candidate Dave Jones appeared yesterday. Jones is one of three candidates seeking the 8th district seat.

Jones' mailer titled "He cares about help people" is a four-page glossy piece. A longtime officer holder who has served as a Sacramento City Councilmember, California Assemblymember, and California State Insurance Commissioner, is running against first-time candidate Rafa Garcia and Sacramento Vice Mayor Angelique Ashby.

Among the highlighted items in the mailer are several endorsements Jones has received. As one of three Democratic candidates in the race, Jones makes three mentions of his California Democratic Party endorsement.

Jones and Ashby are considered the top two contenders for the seat currently held by Dr. Richard Pan. While both Democrats, Ashby is considered more business-friendly while Jones is progressive.

Jones, who is also considered more environmentally conscious than Ashby, said at a candidate forum on Thursday, April 21, that oil companies in multi-platform attack advertisements are targeting him. Jones said companies like Chevron and Valero fund those ads through an independent expenditure committee.

"They don't want me in the state legislature because I am a champion for the climate," Jones said. "That's why they are running false and deceptive ads on TV and billboards. That's why they are trying to take me out."
