Hume outpaces opponents in Sacramento Board of Supervisors District 5 fundraising, has less cash on hand than Moreno

Even though polling data in the closely watched District 5 Sacramento Board of Supervisors race is non-existent, one category shows a clear leader - fundraising.

According to recent financial disclosures filed by the four candidates seeking to replace Don Nottoli, Republican Elk Grove City Councilmember Pat Hume has a clear advantage. Hume has raised approximately $189,644 between January 1 and his latest filing on Friday, May 13.

The next closest is Democratic Cosumnes Community Services District Director Jaclyn Moreno, who has raised approximately $60,972 between January 1 and last week. As of last week, the other two candidates, former Elk Grove Mayor Steve Ly, who is a no party preference, raised $23,768, and Alex Joe has received $6,744 in donations.

Hume has tapped his extensive network of construction and real estate developers to fund his campaign, while Moreno has received donations from labor unions and officeholders like Sacramento City Councilmember and State Senate candidate Angelique Ashby. Joe and Ly are relying on individual contributions.

While Hume has received more contributions, as of April 23, he had less cash on hand than Moreno. Hume had $77,832, while Moreno had $79,858.

In a possible strategy for the June primary, Hume could be leveraging his superior cash position to outspend Moreno and Ly in hopes of exceeding the 50-percent threshold and being declared the winner.
One political insider told Elk Grove News Hume is reportedly near the 50 percent threshold, so the spending on online advertising could suggest this is the strategy.

Conversely, Moreno, aided by an army of labor unions volunteers canvassing precincts on her behalf, could be forecasting no declared winner in the June primary. If that happens, she could advance to the November runoff against Ly or Hume, and extending the campaign will take more cash.
