Moreno wins Sac Bee endorsement over Hume for Sac Board of Supervisors District 5

In a significant boost for her campaign, Sacramento County District 5 Board of Supervisor Jaclyn Moreno's candidacy was endorsed today by the Sacramento Bee. Moreno, a Cosumnes Community Services District Director, and Elk Grove City Councilmember Pat Hume were two of the four candidates hoping to replace long-time Supervisor Don Nottoli who were interviewed by the Bee's editorial board.

In making their recommendation, the Bee said, "Moreno will bring a fresh lens to a stale group. Her experience in the Consumnes Community Services District has made her a fierce advocate for transparency, accountability and smart planning. Her work to help enact — and then actually follow — a climate action plan for the services district bodes well for Sacramento County, which has stalled its own plan for years, much to the chagrin of environmental advocates and the majority of constituents who consider global warming a priority."

While the Bee noted Hume too would be a newcomer to the board and that he possessed "sensible views" during their interview (see video below) they added, "We think he would have too much in common with the passive leadership shown by most board members."

Interestingly, Moreno has served less than four years on the CCSD, while Hume is the longest-tenured city council member with almost 16 years of service. The Bee also endorsed political newcomer Duke Cooney over District 2 incumbent Patrick Kennedy noting the incumbent's "candidacy furthers the same status-quo patterns that are failing county residents."

Among the issues the Bee addressed homelessness and said Hume's approach to the growing problem "boiled down to increasing enforcement — a tactic that overlooks the importance of having shelter or treatment available when a sweep is authorized."

Shortly after receiving the endorsement, Moreno sent a fundraising email and said, "I'm incredibly proud and grateful to let you know that the Sac Bee Editorial Board has interviewed candidates, met with us, and decided that they are endorsing me for County Supervisor in the upcoming June 7 election."

While the endorsement is a welcome development in the competitive race, major metropolitan newspaper endorsements do not carry the heft they once did. Nonetheless, the Bee's endorsement is a positive development for Moreno's campaign.
