In the race for the California State Senate District 5, Democratic candidates Angelique Ashby and Dave Jones both have raised over a million dollars, according to recent financial disclosures filed with the California Secretary of State.

Sacramento City Councilmember Angelique Ashby raised $1,077,895, which includes funds raised in 2021. Ashby's had expenses of $794,669 for the six months ending June 30 (not including adjustments) and has $290,316.

According to his disclosures, former California Assembly member and California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jone received contributions of $1,358,447 through June 30. Jones enters the general election contest against Ashby with $377,692 after spending $980,755.

Like the California Assembly District 10 race, this constest has two Democrats vying for the position. And like the District 10 race, the candidates are from different positions within the party.

Ashby is business-friendly and has received support from public safety associations and business interests. Jones, who has a pro-environmental platform, has been endorsed by the California State Democratic Party and many unions.

In the June primary, Jones received 46 percent of the vote to Ashby's 41. The other candidate, Democrat Rafa Garcia, received 12 percent and has endorsed Jones.
