As Round 2 starts in the bruising District 8 California State Senate race, Jones hits Ashby first

In what will be a bruising continuation of their primary election battle for California State Senate District 8, Dave Jones landed the first punch with last week's mailer.

Jones, a former California Assembly member and State Insurance commissioner, is facing fellow Democrat, Sacramento City Councilmember Angelique Ashby. The two candidates threw repeated punches in several media formats in the hard-fought three-candidate June primary race that had Jones finish first ahead of Ashby and third place finisher Rafa Garcia.

A mailer paid by Jones's campaign was received over the weekend and continues the primary messaging against Ashby. Specifically, Ashby is portrayed as beholden to oil and corporate interests versus Jones, who says he "fights for people."

As typical, one side of the mailer portrays Ashby negatively while highlighting Jones' commitments to voters on the flip side (see below). Through Ashby's campaign funds and independent expenditure committees, Jones was described as a bobblehead and a career politician during the primary.

In other related activities, social media posting show Jones and Garcia jointly campaigning. After being eliminated in the primary, Garcia, who earned 12 percent of the popular vote, has endorsed Jones.
