Yes, the EGUSD ship is taking on water and you can hear the inevitable cry of "man overboard" coming up at the end of this school year I bet!
For too many years, the EGUSD has believed its own hype as an "award-winning" school district, and I'm sure many home buying parents considered the district's reputation when deciding where to move. And of course, the Granite Bay developers eagerly rode that coat-tail as they printed up their new home brochures.
Up until now, the EGUSD spin doctors have done a pretty good job of hyping the positives and shoving the bad news under the carpet. The recent shooting (attempted homicide charge) at Monterey Trail H.S. was a good example of limiting the press coverage, but if Johnny Football gets a scholarship to Timbucktoo University, watch the ink go flying!
If EGUSD doesn't right their ship soon, I'm sure others will do it for them. Voters will oust the current Board members and elect change agent candidates who will then clean house, and/or the developers who fear difficulty attracting home buyers will bring out their financial big guns
This latest debacle just goes to prove that if elected leaders and their staff lose touch with the pulse of the community, the community will rise up and force you to listen. We call this democracy in action.
It’s easy to say we need a change in leadership and I agree that we do, both with the EGUSD as well as with the current city council. But consider this: who will step up to be the change and will new leaders make things better, worse, or keep things status quo? It’s not easy to defeat incumbents. We don’t just need new leaders at the helm. We need new leadership that puts the welfare and education of students before the egos and career aspirations of school board members. Because if we can’t find candidates willing to do that, then there is no point in replacing what we already have with more of the same.
