With the clock winding down toward November 8, this week saw the resumption of independent ads targeting candidates. In ads that began appearing last weekend on social media and political websites, California Assembly District 10 candidate Stephanie Nguyen has been targeted.

Those ads sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) seized on Nguyen's no-reply questionnaire sent to primary candidates last spring. That survey was sent to Nguyen and fellow Democrats Eric Guerra and Dr. Tecoy Porter, and Republican the late Eric Rigard.

Only Guerra and Porter responded to the ACLU. The group sent a mailer before the June primary commending Guerra and Porter's participation as a follow-up.

With Nguyen and Guerra facing off in the November election, the ACLU resumed advertising the questionnaire. A click-through on their ad takes readers to a slide show (see video below) with Guerra and Nguyen's responses to 14 questions covering criminal justice, police practices, immigrants rights, voting rights, LBGTQ+ rights, reproductive justice, and racial and economic justice.

The slide show displays Nguyen's non-response to the questions while Guerra answered all but one. While the presentation highlighted Nguyen's non-response, it did not endorse Guerra.

While the survey could help Guerra with Democratic voters, it might be to Nguyen's detriment. Considered a moderate Democrat, Nguyen is expected to attract Republican pro-law enforcement voters, and stances contrary to the ACLU might help her win votes with this audience.
